Choosing Your Next Body Massager: Expert Advice

Navigating Your First Personal Body Massager Purchase: Expert Tips

Dr. Vidhi Modi, a sexologist and psychiatrist practicing for 11 years in Gujarat, shares her tips and recommendations on personal body massagers. According to Dr. Vidhi, "Personal body massagers are an empowering tool to help us discover and understand our bodies."
Oh, and we were surprised to know that they are common among women and men, and often used by couples! We learn something new every day.

What are personal body massagers and how do they work?

"Personal body massagers are devices designed to help release muscle tension using electric power to create vibrations or pulses. But guess what? Just like many other household devices, like a shower spray or even your favorite pillow, they can be used... differently," says Dr. Modi. Who knew, right?

What can we learn from personal body massagers?

"There are many ways to self-pleasure," says Dr. Vidhi Modi, "but personal body massagers can allow us to explore our bodies and our pleasure points." You might even be able to tweak their original usage to help you discover your G-spot, an erogenous zone inside the vagina, or assist with clitoral stimulation to reach orgasm. "Understanding, recognizing, and experiencing what brings us pleasure is the most powerful thing we can do for our sexual well-being."
Erm… But we designed ours for sore muscles and relaxation! Human imagination is truly endless.

What to consider before buying a personal body massager?

Dr. Vidhi Modi mentions that "whatever they want to use them for, patients are curious to explore the massagers available online but are often confused about their safety." She advises, "If you’re new to the world of personal body massagers, choosing one can seem pretty daunting. These massagers offer a whole variety of different sensations and there’s plenty to choose from depending on what you are looking for! Personal body massagers are safe to use, but there are a few things to keep in mind when choosing and enjoying one:"

  1. Understand what material it’s made from
  2. Keep things clean
  3. Decide what kind of stimulation you want (internal or external)
  4. Know yourself, and then know your settings
  5. Consider the Noise Level: Discreteness Can Be Important
  6. Evaluate the Price
  7. Be Cautious with Remote-Controlled Options
  8. Look for Legitimacy Marks

  • Understand what material it’s made from

"Rubber, jelly, and vinyl materials are generally not body-safe because they contain a chemical component called phthalate," says Dr. Vidhi Modi. "Phthalates are considered possible human carcinogens and can be harmful to the body. The best options are body-safe materials like medical-grade silicone, ABS plastics, and even stainless steel or glass, although I don't generally encourage glass due to the potential for micro-breaks that could be harmful."

  • Keep things clean

"Personal body massagers can harbor bacteria, so washing them before and after every use is crucial," advises our expert. "Washing them with soapy warm water will help minimize bacteria growth, but be sure to check the care instructions for each massager – they can differ."

  • Decide what kind of stimulation you want (internal or external)

"Once you're certain that the product is made of good quality material, it’s important to understand what types of sensations you enjoy or are curious about," our expert emphasizes. "Is it internal or external, vibration or penetration? Do you like broad, rumbly sensations?" Answering these questions will definitely point you in the direction of the right massager. "There's a wide variety of massagers available and they can all be tweaked for various purposes. Choose the ones you feel most comfortable with. Of course, start with a smaller size if you are a beginner to ensure comfort."

  • Know yourself, and then know your settings

"The strength of personal body massagers ranges from soft pulsations to deep and rumbling to fast and powerful," Dr. Vidhi Modi says. "To pick out the perfect vibe, it’s a good idea to know your general sensitivity level. Ask yourself if you enjoy soft or strong stimulation. It’s smart to look for a body massager that has multiple levels of intensity. This gives a person the ability to experiment with different intensities and choose between light to strong stimulation."

  • Consider the Noise Level: Discreteness Can Be Important

"If you live with others or prefer privacy, consider the noise level of the massager," advises our expert. "Some massagers are quieter than others. Reading reviews can also give you an idea of how loud a massager might be in real use. A quieter massager ensures you can enjoy your experience without worrying about being overheard."

  • Evaluate the Price

"Good quality materials, like ABS plastics and medical-grade silicone, are usually quite expensive to produce," says Dr. Vidhi Modi. "Avoid very cheap products, as they are probably not following high standards for the material."

  • Be Cautious with Remote-Controlled Options

"In some places in the world, remote-controlled massagers are subject to restrictions because they have been found to emit high levels of electromagnetic waves," our expert advises. "Remote-controlled may not be a very safe option."

  • Look for Legitimacy Marks

"Ensure the massager has legitimacy marks like certifications, CE marks, or other indicators of quality and safety," says our expert. "These marks can help assure you that the product meets certain safety standards."

Expert's take:

Dr. Vidhi Modi insists, "Prioritize your safety and comfort by choosing the right materials and keeping it clean. Try it with an open mind, but if you want to integrate it into partner play, make sure to discuss it beforehand."
